I love admiring beautiful holiday desserts this time of year. Before I had kids, I also loved making beautiful holiday desserts. For the past decade, though, with two young kids and a lot going on, I’ve found it’s best to stick with easy holiday classics.
In our house, the three desserts we always make in December are my Mom’s poppy seed bread (Hi, Mom!), Russian tea cakes and Saltine dark chocolate toffee.
Saltine Dark Chocolate Toffee
This recipe should immediately go into your holiday rotation because it’s so easy and so dang good. It’s the holiday dessert that my kids beg to make on Dec 1st and my husband asks me to hide because it’s insanely addictive.
To make Saltine toffee, you only need 4 ingredients and about 15 minutes, plus time for the toffee to chill.
It’s the perfect dessert when you need something easy and fast for a holiday cookie exchange or holiday party. Or, you just want something simple and homemade for your own family to snack on.
Saltine toffee is one of those recipes that has swirled around the internet forever. Whoever came up with it (probably Nabisco?), God bless ‘em. This toffee is buttery and flakey with a sweet caramel layer topped with dark melted chocolate. I always add sea salt and pretty sprinkles. You can also add coconut or chopped nuts.
This holiday season, my kids are noticeably older. With a tween and a full-fledged teen in the house, I just might have the time and energy to make a holiday dessert that’s a little more complicated. But even if I do make a gorgeous Christmas pavlova this year, we’ll still have a container of Saltine toffee stashed in the fridge.
Hope you enjoy this simple holiday treat!
Jenny
P.S. We make the Russian tea cake recipe from Smitten Kitchen. We don’t add nuts because my kids don’t like them added.
P.P.S. The poppy seed bread is a secret family recipe, but maybe I’ll share it one day :)
